    Default Oxycontin How they work

I'm courious about how oxycontin ir works. Say u have a oxy ir 40mg does it release 40 mg every so many hours or does it just release so many mgs per hr. I currently take norco 10/325 3x a day. What oxy would be equivelent to what i now take. I have been on hydrocodone fo 4yrs. I have chronic pain in my lower and upper back. The norco works okay but i was wondering if for long term if the oxycontin would be better.

    There are two different things:

oxycontin: is extended release. In other words, a 40mg oxycontin would release the drug oxycodone steadily over 8-12h.

oxycodone IR (oxy IR): it is Immediate Release. In other words the 40 mg would release and you would feel all 40 mg in ~20 min and all drug would be 'gone' in 4-5 hours. Oxycodone is also in Percocet.

Both oxycontin and oxycodone have the exact same narcotic (oxycodone) in the pills but one is made to release the drug slowly and the other immediately. Obviously, if an oxycontin pill is crushed, then all the drug is released at once (and by definition this is abuse of the drug).

By definition there is no such thing as "oxycontin IR" as oxycontin is extended release and IR = immediate release.

    I hope that helped.

Thanks for ur response. I meant oxy extended release not instant. Any ideal on how much it releases at a time or is it lke releasing a little at a time constantly.

go to the purdue pharma website. there used to be and probably still is a lot of info on how it is released into your bloodstream.

Theoretically, it would release the 40mg over 8-12 hours (a little at a time). So a 40 mg oxycontin pill would release approximately 3 to 5 mg each hour as it traveled through your system. Please remember that for all the science behind meds, everyone is different (different digestive systems, metabolic systems, etc) so your experience with an ER might be different than someone elses.

    Again, hope that helped.
