Default Black stool as a side effect?

I have been having diarrhea for 4 days and my doctor told me to take a Pepto-Bismol. I don't have it anymore, but I do have black stool and the pain didn't stop, and I also started vomiting. I don't think this is normal. Can I get some advice? BTW I am 23, male, physically active.

Black can mean dried blood, or blood in upper gi tract (stomach or small intestines). Do you have ulcers? Also iron suppliments can turn stools black. If you are taking vitamins and minerals to help, see if one of them has Iron. Blood in the stool usually needs to be determined where it is coming from. An urgent care can usually run a stool culture for you and help you determine your next step, so unless you are positive it is Iron, get it tested.

Black is absolutely a side effect of Pepto Bismol. I remember calling the doctor in a panic years ago, I was scared to death I had some awful disease - first thing the doctor asked me was did I consume Pepto Bismol or licorice. Apparently both make your stool black.
