Default My experience giving birth while on subutex

I've been a long time lurker on this site for years. I just wanted to share my experience on subutex, for any pregnant woman going through it.

I was in pain management for a few years and found out I was pregnant. I was on mirena so it was a shock when I found out. I told my dr I wanted to be off my pain medication so my baby would be born healthy. I was supposed to go on subutex for about a month to taper to make the withdrawl easier. My drs really didn't know much about the subutex and I found Roberts taper plan and wrote it out and presented it to them. They gave me 60 2mg pills and said good luck!!

I got a call from my ob and a specialist with this medication and pregnancy told me absolutely not to wean!! I was destroyed because I wanted to be off of everything for my baby's sake. She told me horror stories of women stopping and causing miscarriages etc. I took her advice and stayed on my medication.

I was prescribed 4mg of subutex and weaned myself down to 2mg against their advice and they told me absolutely not to go down any further. I had to take a drug tests the day I went in for induction. I was in labor for almost 24 hours. As soon I I gave birth, they asked my fiancé to step out and told me my UA was positive for amphetamines. I was shocked and in disbelief because I've never taken anything besides my subutex. They refused to let me breastfed until they could send my urine for further testing that would pin point what I "supposedly" took. They tested my sons urine and he was negative.

Because of the positve UA they had to send my case to a social worker. I was so scared because I thought I was going to lose my baby over something I've never taken!!!

My baby was examined by the NICU team and was fine. After not being able to breastfed for almost a day he started to get just a bit uneasy. Like if he wasn't swaddled and someone touched him he was twitchy. In guess that's the best way I can describe it. If he was swaddled and left alone to eat and sleep he was fine.

The next day after I gave birth I asked the nurse when they would get the results so I could breastfeed and she told me I could. The dr finally came in and told me my first test was a false positive. I was so upset because they treated me like >>>> and the social worker was accusing me of doing meth! The cps lady closed my case once they got that result.

Besides that dreadful experience. I was able to feed my son 24 hours after giving birth to him. I was sent home with him two days after giving birth. I stopped breastfeeding when he was 6 months and he was absolutely fine! I opted to stay in a low dose of subutex for awhile because it helped with my pain better than the oxycodone or OxyContin. I'm in the process of tapering now. If anyone has any question feel free to ask. I hope my story, besides my terrible experience with my UA can help someone. I've loved reading everyone's post over the years and some of those posts encouraged me to taper off!
